Southampton's centre was heavily bombed in the Second World War, so a good deal of the city near the docks was rebuilt in the postwar decades — different from the Victorian terraces that still dominate Portswood, Shirley and Bitterne further out. That split matters for solar design: the rebuilt areas tend to have simpler, more consistent roof shapes, while the older terraced streets need more individual attention to pitch and neighbouring shade.
