Why solar + EV
What you get with a Geko EV install.
Charge from your roof
Solar-aware chargers divert your surplus solar into the car automatically. Free miles from April to September.
Time-of-use tariffs
Charge overnight on a 7p/kWh tariff like Octopus Intelligent. ~2p per mile instead of ~12p on petrol.
OZEV-approved install
All our EV installers are OZEV-certified. Required for workplace and grant-eligible installs.
Smart app control
Schedule, monitor, and split solar/grid charging from your phone. All chargers we fit support full smart control.
The chargers we fit
Four chargers we trust on our own homes.
Myenergi Zappi
The gold standard for solar integration. Three modes (Eco+, Eco, Fast), beautiful app. Made in the UK.
Hypervolt Home 3 Pro
Slick design, great mobile app, full solar integration. Strong alternative to Zappi with a more modern aesthetic.
Ohme ePod
Built around time-of-use tariffs. Brilliant for Octopus Intelligent users. Compact, simple, cheap.
Easee Charge
Compact and good-looking. Solid mainstream choice without the premium price.
Charging modes
Three modes. Pick one per charge.
ECO+
Only charges when there's surplus solar being exported. Ramps power up and down to track generation. Zero grid import — but slow if the sun's weak.
ECO
Prioritises solar but tops up from the grid if needed to keep a minimum charge rate. Best balance for most homes.
FAST
Full 7kW from any source — solar, battery, or grid. Use when you need a quick top-up regardless of cost.
FAQ
Common questions.
How fast does a 7kW charger actually charge?
A 7kW charger adds around 25–30 miles of range per hour. A typical UK EV with a 60kWh battery goes from 20% to 80% in about 5 hours. Overnight charging fully replenishes most cars from empty.
Do I need a 7kW or 22kW charger?
7kW (single-phase) for almost every UK home — 22kW (three-phase) requires a three-phase grid connection that most UK domestic properties don't have. 22kW installations also cost £2,000–£4,000 more.
Can I charge from solar in winter?
Yes, but generation is much lower November–February — typically 5–15% of an EV's annual charging comes from solar in midwinter. Annual average across UK homes is around 35–45% of EV charging from solar.
Does my consumer unit need upgrading?
Sometimes. Older units may need an RCBO added, a CT clamp fitted for load management, or occasionally a full upgrade. We assess this during the site survey.
Is the install grant-eligible?
The EV chargepoint grant for households was replaced in 2022 by the Electric Vehicle chargepoint grant for flats, rented accommodation and the Workplace Charging Scheme. We'll flag if you're eligible and handle the paperwork.
Can I combine with battery storage?
Absolutely — and it's a strong combo. Charge the battery during the day from solar, then discharge it into the car overnight. Some systems (Tesla Powerwall + Tesla Wall Connector) integrate this natively.
Will it work with my car?
Yes — all 7kW Type 2 chargers in the UK work with every EV sold here. Tethered (cable attached) vs untethered (you bring your own cable) is a personal preference.
What if I move house?
Chargers can be moved to a new property — our install team handles disconnection and reinstallation. Some homeowners leave the charger as a selling point.
