The industry norm
Most solar companies do not install anything.
A large portion of the UK solar industry runs on a subcontractor model. The company you buy from handles sales and marketing. The actual installation is done by a separate crew, often a small contractor or group of self-employed tradespeople who rotate between multiple companies week to week.
You might not discover this until install day, when a van pulls up with a different name on the side. The people on your roof have never spoken to the person who designed your system. If something goes wrong six months later, you call the company you paid, they call the subcontractor, and both point at each other.
We built Geko to work differently. Every person who sets foot on your property is employed by us. They are trained by us, insured by us, and managed by us. The engineer who designs your system on the video call briefs the team who fits it. There is no middleman.

Our own people
Every installer on your roof is employed by Geko. They carry our ID, wear our kit, and report to our project managers. We do not hire agency workers or subcontract to third parties.

Consistent quality
Subcontractors work to different standards depending on who trained them. Our installers are trained to one standard and checked against it on every job. The quality does not vary from house to house.

Your workmanship guarantee is backed by Geko and underwritten by our IBG through IAA. A subcontractor warranty is only as strong as their own business, and many are sole traders.
Safety we control
Our teams work to our health and safety protocols. We carry employer's liability and public liability insurance for every member of the team. We do not rely on a subcontractor's own cover.

Questions about our installation team.
Do all solar companies use their own installers?
No. Many UK solar companies operate as sales and marketing businesses. They sell the job, then subcontract the installation to a separate team. Some use a network of self-employed installers or agency workers who rotate between companies. You may not know who is actually on your roof until they arrive.
Why does it matter whether the installer is employed or subcontracted?
Accountability. If a subcontractor does poor work, chasing a fix means going through the company that sold the job, who then has to go back to the subcontractor. If the subcontractor has moved on or gone bust, you are left without recourse. With an employed team, there is one company responsible for everything.
How can I tell if a company uses subcontractors?
Ask them directly: are the people who install the system employed by you? If the answer involves words like 'trusted network', 'approved partners', or 'vetted contractors', that usually means subcontractors. An in-house installer will say yes without qualification.
Does in-house installation cost more?
Not necessarily. Subcontractor models have their own costs. The sales company takes a margin, the subcontractor takes a margin, and both need to cover overheads. An in-house model removes the middleman. Our pricing reflects one company doing one job.
What about MCS certification?
The MCS certificate is issued in the name of the company that holds the certification, not the individual installer. If a company subcontracts to a non-MCS team, the work may still carry an MCS certificate, but the quality control gap is real. Our MCS certification covers our own employed team doing the work under our direct supervision.
Do you cover my area?
We install across England, Wales, and Scotland. Our teams travel to you. Same team, same standards, same process regardless of location.
