Battery storage

Hold today's sunshine for tonight's bills.

A battery is what turns a solar system from “useful while the sun's out” into “powers your home around the clock”. Every kWh you generate but don't use right away is stored, then released in the evening when prices spike or when the panels go quiet. Every Geko install is battery-ready — fit one on day one or add it later.

How it works

The battery sits beside your inverter, indoors or in the garage. It charges from your panels during the day and powers your home through the evening, drawing from the grid only if it empties. On a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Agile or Intelligent it also charges from the grid in the cheap window — a second saving on top of the solar one.

Sizing

For most UK homes, 5–10 kWh hits the sweet spot. We size to your real evening usage, EV charging, and tariff. Too small and you spill solar to the grid for pennies. Too big and you'll cycle it less than once a day, slowing payback. If a battery doesn't earn its keep yet, we'll tell you straight.

Adding later

Every Geko hybrid inverter is battery-ready, so retrofitting is a few hours of work — no panel disruption, no re-commissioning. Many customers start solar-only, watch their actual generation and usage for 6–12 months, then size a battery on real data. You pay a little more than bundling up front, but you decide on evidence.

Brands we install

Tesla Powerwall 3, GivEnergy and Solis LFP batteries. All lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry — safer and longer-lived than older lithium-ion. 10-year manufacturer warranty on the battery itself, with live monitoring in your phone app from day one.

Want a battery without the panels? We do those too — particularly for homes on a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Agile or Intelligent where grid arbitrage alone can pay back the install. Mention it on your consultation call and we'll run the maths.

Our tech

The kit we'd put on our own roof.

Sleek solar panels

High-performance Tier-1 PV panels (Aiko, JA Solar, Jinko), 440–455W per panel, all-black aesthetic, 25-year product and performance warranty.

Battery storage

Tesla, GivEnergy and Solis hybrid batteries. LFP chemistry, 10–12 year warranty, sized 5–20 kWh. Optional blackout backup circuit.

Smart hybrid inverters

GivEnergy and Solis hybrid inverters with full battery and EV integration. 10–12 year warranty, monitored 24/7.

Got questions about solar?

Everything you were wondering about, explained properly.

How long will it take for the panels to pay for themselves?

Most UK homes see payback in 8–11 years for solar alone, or 9–13 years with a battery. Depends on your unit rate, your roof orientation, and how much of your generation you self-consume. After payback, the system runs essentially free for the remaining 15+ years.

How do I get paid to export energy?

We register your install with MCS and SEG. You apply to your preferred SEG supplier (Octopus, E.ON, British Gas all pay competitive rates). Export payments come monthly or quarterly direct from them — and you can switch SEG supplier independently of your import tariff.

Will it work in a power cut?

Standard grid-tied solar shuts off during a cut for engineer safety. If blackout backup matters, we'll fit a battery with a dedicated backup circuit so your essentials (lights, fridge, WiFi) keep running. Adds £400–£800 to the install.

Do you handle the DNO and planning?

Yes — we manage the DNO G98/G99 application end-to-end. Planning is rarely needed for residential (permitted development covers most homes), but where it is, we handle that too. You don't deal with the network operator or planning office at all.

How long does the install actually take?

One or two days on the roof for most UK homes. Scaffolding goes up the day before, panels and inverter go in the next morning, and we hand the property back with everything tested and monitored from your phone before we leave. Total timeline from signed contract to switch-on is usually 3–6 weeks, most of which is the DNO commissioning step.

What warranty do I get?

25 years on the panels, 25 years on our workmanship, 10–12 years on the inverter, and 10 years on batteries. Our workmanship warranty is insurance-backed through the IAA Microgeneration Guarantee Scheme, which means it stays valid even if Geko ever ceased trading — the biggest risk of buying solar from a smaller installer, neutralised.

What happens on cloudy days or in winter?

You still generate — just less. A UK 4 kW system typically produces around 70% of its annual output between April and September and 30% between October and March. Even on a grey winter day you'll see 5–15% of a sunny summer day. Annual figures we quote already factor in real UK weather — no rose-tinted calculator maths.

What size battery should I get?

For most UK homes, 5–10 kWh is the sweet spot. Smaller and you spill solar to the grid for pennies; larger and you'll cycle it less than once a day, slowing payback. We size based on your evening usage, EV charging plans, and whether you're on a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Agile or Intelligent. If a battery doesn't earn its keep yet, we'll tell you straight.

Can I add a battery later?

Yes — every Geko hybrid inverter is battery-ready, so adding storage later is a few hours' work with no panel disruption. Many customers start solar-only, watch their actual usage for 6–12 months, then size a battery on real data. The total cost is slightly higher than bundling at install, but you make a better-informed decision.

What happens if I move house?

The system stays with the property — solar PV is widely recognised as a value-adding home improvement, and many surveyors reflect it in their valuations. Your MCS and IAA warranties transfer to the new owners automatically. We send transfer paperwork on request, and our workmanship warranty continues regardless of who owns the home.
