FAQ

Everything else.

How long does a solar install take?

Most residential installs complete in a single day. Full process from signing to switch-on is typically 4–8 weeks, mostly waiting on DNO approval.

Do I need planning permission?

Almost never. Solar panels on most UK homes fall under permitted development. Exceptions: listed buildings, conservation areas, and some flats. We check this for you before designing.

Will my roof take it?

Modern panels weigh around 10–14 kg/m² fully mounted — well within the load tolerance of any modern UK roof. Older slate roofs sometimes need a structural assessment; we'll flag this on the site survey.

What's the payback period?

For a typical UK home with a 4–6 kW system, payback is 8–11 years for solar alone or 9–13 years with a battery. After payback, the system generates effectively free electricity for the remaining 15+ years.

Can I add a battery later?

Yes. We fit a battery-ready hybrid inverter from day one, so adding storage in year 2 or 5 is straightforward and doesn't require swapping out the inverter.

Do you handle the SEG paperwork?

We register your install with MCS, hand you the certificate, and point you at the best SEG tariffs (currently Octopus and E.ON pay the most). You apply to the SEG supplier directly — they handle the rest.

Will it work in a power cut?

Standard grid-tied solar shuts off during a power cut for engineer safety. If blackout backup matters, you can add a battery with a dedicated blackout circuit.

What about retrofitting onto an existing solar install?

We routinely retrofit batteries onto 5–10 year old solar systems. Sometimes the existing inverter can be kept; often we add a separate AC-coupled battery inverter to avoid disturbing the original install.
