Portsmouth is built almost entirely on Portsea Island, and that geography makes it one of the most densely built-up cities in the UK outside London — tight Victorian terraces packed close together across most of the island, with far less space between roofs than in most towns we cover. That density is exactly why we survey every property individually: a neighbour's roofline two feet away can shade a panel that would perform perfectly on an identical house with more clearance.

Away from the island's dense core, Cosham, Portchester and the mainland suburbs around Waterlooville have more typical semi-detached and detached housing with straightforward roof access.

Southsea, along the seafront, has its own mix of grand Victorian terraces and later conversions — several streets carry conservation status, and we design around rear roof planes where a front-facing install would need extra planning care.

SSEN runs the electricity network across Portsmouth and the south Hampshire coast, and the DNO notification and commissioning sign-off are handled by us as part of the job.
