MCS certification: what it is and why it matters.

If your installer isn't MCS-certified, you can't access SEG. That's just the start of why it matters.

Buying guide

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the UK's national quality mark for small-scale renewable energy installs. For solar, MCS is more than just a badge — it's a gateway requirement.

What MCS actually covers

An MCS-certified installer has been independently audited for design competency, install quality, business stability, and complaint handling. Their installs follow MIS-3002 — the MCS solar standard — which dictates panel mounting, wiring, isolators, signage, commissioning testing, and handover documentation.

Crucially, MCS certifies both the installer (the company doing the work) and individual technicians. The certificate they issue you after install is a legally important document.

Why it matters financially

Three direct financial implications:

  • Without an MCS certificate, you cannot register for the Smart Export Guarantee. No MCS, no SEG income.
  • 0% VAT on domestic solar requires MCS (or equivalent) certification of the install.
  • Most home insurers require MCS sign-off to cover the install on your policy without surcharge.

What MCS doesn't guarantee

MCS is a floor, not a ceiling. An MCS-certified installer might still cut corners on workmanship warranty length, use cheaper Tier-2 panels, subcontract the actual install to people you've never spoken to, or pressure-sell on doorstep visits. MCS won't stop any of that.

Use MCS as a baseline filter — never hire a non-MCS installer for grid-connected solar. Then assess everything else on top: warranty terms, who actually does the install, what components they use, and how they handle the design conversation.

How to verify

Every MCS-certified installer has a public listing on mcscertified.com. Search by company name or postcode — if they're not there, they're not certified, regardless of what their quote says.
